The UAE is preparing to launch a new digital identification system that will replace the need for physical Emirates ID cards. Expected within a year, the system will use facial recognition and biometric technology to streamline access to essential services across sectors such as banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications.
The initiative, led by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), was highlighted during a Federal National Council session. Members emphasized that continued reliance on physical ID cards creates challenges for residents, particularly in healthcare, financial transactions, and hotel check-ins.
Minister Abdul Rahman Al Owais confirmed that e-Emirates ID is already in use across many services, with expansion underway. The system will be facilitated through the UAEPASS app, which securely stores digital documents, including Emirates IDs.
ICP previously introduced face recognition technology for UAEPASS at GITEX 2021, marking the first secure national digital identity in the UAE. The upcoming rollout will involve collaboration with partners to ensure reliable biometric verification, legal compliance, and strong data protection standards.
This move reflects the UAE’s broader digital transformation strategy, aimed at enhancing convenience, security, and trust for citizens and residents.
