Riyadh was selected by a majority of 119 out of 165 votes at Beaurue International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris on Tuesday. South Korea’s Busan got 29 votes and Itlay’s Rome got 17 votes.
As the stakes soared, each city raised its efforts, presenting unique visions and aspirations to secure the reputed world event. The Expo 2030 in Riyadh is again a big victory for a Gulf country after the football World Cup in Qatar last year.
Saudi Arabia is set to host 2034’s World Cup and is also arranging an Olympics proposal. In a video shown before the voting, Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Al Nassar club was signed up by Riyadh to impress the BIE members.
Riyadh has put forth a proposal to host the event from October 2030 to March 2031. This win is a big boost for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 plan, aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on oil.
We had a great team of ministers traveling worldwide, talking to other countries to understand what they wanted and gain their trust,” said Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
