Dubai is advancing its strategic vision to establish the world’s most interconnected transport hub, centering on the Dh128 billion ($34.8 billion) expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). The project is designed to create a seamless multimodal network, integrating high-speed national rail, local metro services, and next-generation urban air mobility.
A New Global Standard for Capacity
The expansion of Al Maktoum International represents a massive shift in the UAE’s aviation landscape. Upon completion, the airport will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, providing the capacity to handle up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
According to Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, the facility will eventually replace Dubai International (DXB) as the primary gateway for the emirate. The design philosophy shifts away from traditional, sprawling terminals in favor of a more modular, “smart” layout intended to reduce walking distances and streamline passenger processing through advanced technology.
The Etihad Rail Connection
A critical component of the project’s infrastructure is its integration with the UAE’s national railway. A dedicated station for Etihad Rail will be built directly at the airport, linking the terminal to a network that spans the entire country.
This rail link is expected to transform regional logistics and travel, allowing passengers from Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates to access the mega-airport via high-speed train. By connecting the airport to the national rail network, Dubai aims to bridge the gap between air and land transport, positioning DWC as a central node for both international transit and domestic mobility.
Expanding Urban Transit: The Gold Line
To facilitate local access, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the development of the Metro Gold Line. This 42-kilometer line will serve 15 stations, connecting major residential and business districts—including Dubai South—directly to the airport.
The Gold Line is part of a broader Dh34 billion expansion of the Dubai Metro system, which also includes the Blue Line. These projects are designed to support the projected population growth in the southern areas of the city and ensure that the airport is easily accessible to the 1.5 million residents expected to live in the vicinity by 2030.
Advanced Mobility and Air Taxis
In addition to rail and metro links, Al Maktoum International is set to become a pioneer in urban air mobility. Plans are underway to integrate a vertiport within the airport precinct, enabling electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft—commonly known as air taxis—to transport passengers to and from key locations across Dubai. This initiative aims to provide a premium, traffic-free alternative for business travelers and tourists, further diversifying the city’s transport options.
As construction progresses, the phased transition of operations from DXB to DWC will begin, marking a new era for the UAE’s economy and its status as a global leader in infrastructure and logistics.
