UAE Extends VAT Filing Deadline

Recently, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), the Government authority responsible for all tax-related matters, issued a statement that 28th May 2020 is the revised deadline for all VAT filings related to the period ending March 31.

In the wake of the unprecedented business situation due to the COVID-19 situation, the FTA recently took cognizance of the fact that many businesses would have found it difficult to run normally, also fueled by the 24-hour movement restrictions imposed on vehicles and individuals. This resulted in the FTA issuing the directive under exceptional business circumstances.

The FTA adds that the revised deadline of May 28, 2020 is only for VAT related filings for which the deadline falls in April 2020. All other VAT related filings for other periods are not covered in this directive. Whether the VAT filing is monthly or quarterly, and the respective monthly or quarterly period ends on March 31, 2020, the deadline stands revised to May 28, 2020.

The FTA urged all businesses to provide accurate filing of all the VAT returns and to utilize all available channels for filing returns within the stipulated deadline. The FTA in this regard has made remote services available, with payment being facilitated from any location and any time 24hrs a day. The FTA has implemented an automated electronic system to enable this process.
