Over 5.5 Million Tourists Expected in 2021 to Dubai

Dubai Tourism expects to have 5.5 million visitors this year, in spite of ban on inbound tourism from key countries.

Dubai Tourism has revealed its ambitious expectation to have 5.5 million inbound tourists for 2021. This is largely due to its positive outlook on new and emerging tourism markets such as Europe, Africa and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

In 2020, the tourists numbered 5.5 million, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, this number was 16.7 million tourists. This year for 2021, the bans are still in force for key countries like India, due to which the numbers have reduced significantly.

Later this year, the Expo 2020 is expected to attract a huge number of tourists, but with the pandemic the Dubai Tourism is conservative on the tourist numbers.

The UK for instance, has banned direct flights and requires tourists from UAE to be in quarantine.

These were positively offset by the emergence of tourists from new markets such as Europe, CIS and Africa, which led to good performance on the numbers, and ultimately forecasting same as last year.

It is to be noted that the international borders were opened in July 2020, with Dubai being a preferred New Year destination spot. However, the second wave of Covid-19 coincided with the influx of tourists, leading to a restricted capacity utilization in the hospitality sector, especially hotels and restaurants.

It is also to be noted that the vaccination drive in UAE has been a strong success, and the UAE is currently one of the world leaders in terms of vaccination doses per population.
